ArcaOS

ArcaOS 5.0.4 now available

After nearly a year of development and testing, Arca Noae is proud to announce the general availability of ArcaOS 5.0.4, the fourth maintenance release of ArcaOS 5.0 (Blue Lion).

ArcaOS 5.0.4 introduces a new Updater feature, allowing all previous ArcaOS installations to be brought up to the current codebase by simply booting from the installation medium, selecting the new Update option on the Installation Type page, and finally the target system volume to be updated. The resulting system is essentially what a fresh install would be, without losing settings, other installed programs, application data, and having to reconfigure the environment from scratch.

ArcaOS 5.0.4 includes well over 100 updates and fixes since 5.0.3. The USB stick image package has also been updated to incorporate the latest changes in ArcaOS 5.0.4 and is now personalized, delivered in the same archive as the ISO itself, and may be created using any major operating system at hand (Windows, Linux, MacOS, and of course, OS/2, eComStation, and ArcaOS). Once the image is restored, eject, re-insert, and simply copy your ISO to the stick per the included directions (also detailed in the ArcaOS support wiki). The stick may then be inserted into any USB 2.0-controlled port in the target system, and used to boot into the ArcaOS installer/updater.

Systems originally installed from DVD may be updated using the AltBoot (USB stick) method, and systems originally installed from USB stick may be updated from DVD; the choice is yours.

If you have experienced difficulty installing previous releases of ArcaOS on your hardware, the fixes and updates included in 5.0.4 may address your issue(s). ArcaOS 5.0.4 includes a major update to the installation boot component, making it easier than ever to boot and install on systems with non-standard memory configurations.

For a complete list of updates in this release, see the ArcaOS wiki. Be sure to review the README.TXT, as well, as this contains critical information to ensure that you get up and running fast, and includes tips for getting things adjusted right away.

To download your fresh ISO, simply visit your customer portal page, select the Orders & Subscriptions link on the navigation panel to the left, then click on the order for your ArcaOS license. Once there, click the download link to request a fresh ISO, and wait for your notification email.

DFSee 16

DFSee MAJOR version 16.0 released

In case anyone missed this in the news outlets, here is an abbreviated version of the official DFSee 16.0 release announcement:

DFSee version 16.0 has been released, with significant new functionality and fixes.

It is a MAJOR release, introducing TWO new filesystems with full support including file browsing and recovery, bringing the total number of supported filesystems to around 10!

The new filesystems are:

ISO – The ISO9660 filesystem as used on CDROM’s and DVD media, and perhaps more importantly in .ISO imagefiles representing them.

You can now use DFSee to copy files from a CD/DVD or ISO image.

The Rock-Ridge (Unix/Linux) and Jolliet (Windows long names) extensions are supported as well, selectable where needed.

APFS – The new Apple filesystem, used in iOS and newer macOS versions (High Sierra, Mojave) that moves up a lot of the filesystem limits from the older HFS+ and is optimized for SSD storage.

APFS supports multiple independent volumes in one partition, all sharing the same pool of storage blocks (container), and it is organized using B-trees for almost everything, making access to information really fast.

The APFS support has all the familiar DFSee analysis functions and also supports browsing and file-recovery for normal files. (XATTR and Resource-fork support will be coming soon).

There have also been some improvements in the menu-system like attached submenus to select a partition for PTEdit or LVM, to select an APFS volume from a container or to select between Standard, Jolliet or El-Torito areas within an ISO.

Of course, as usual, there are also many smaller improvements and bug fixes.

This being a major release, it will require an upgrade if you currently have a registration for an older version, so visit the DFSee product page in the ArcaOS store to purchase an upgrade at a great price.

Note: Keys sold on or after January 1, 2019 are valid for version 16.x, with no additional upgrade required.

The Base, Net, and Win packages have been updated as of 2019-02-14. The Win update resolves several minor issues in the File Open Container (FOC) used by default in ArcaOS, and introduces an Advanced Presentation Manager Programming library, providing several new functions for PM programmers to use in their own applications.

These packages are provided by Arca Noae as a convenience to our customers, clients, and the community at large. Arca Noae does not produce these packages, and the software is provided “as is” without any warranty of any kind. Support for the eCo Software Runtime is provided by eCo Software, in their support forum.

See our new product and activity roadmaps!

We often get asked,”so what’s next for ArcaOS?” “Where can we see you guys?” “What have you done with XYZ?” We realize our original roadmap page fell short, and the more work we did, the harder it became to keep updating that page — especially when it was all-in-one.

So, we decided to do something about that. We’ve split our roadmaps into different targeted areas, namely, General, ArcaOS, Drivers, Software, and Advocacy & Events. We’ll do our best to keep these pages updated with our latest plans and releases.

2019 is starting off as a great year for Arca Noae, and there is a lot of great stuff on the horizon. ArcaOS 5.0.4 is in beta, which will include a number of great updates including Samba 4.9 and a handy updater feature which should update even an early 5.0 release to the latest code in a matter of a few minutes. USB 3 is also on the way very soon, now.

Watch for more updates to our software and to our roadmaps as we move further into this year.
